Cahliel Osama Essays (320 words) - Racism In South Africa
Cahliel Osama Foreigners Need To Pack Their Bags And Leave Summary Xenophobia mean intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries. People can get this fear from having physical, emotional, economic, and political bad experiences with foreigners. After the establishment of democratic governments in 1994 xenophobia in South Africa increased drastically, But it wasn't until 2000 that physical actions took place. The reason the riots started recently, in January, was because a foreigner (Somalian) murdered a South African tennager. It was not noted why he was murdered. The South Africans want the foreigners to leave. This is currently happening in South Africa, Durban. The foreigners are fighting back peacefully and are saying that we have no where else to go. Some foreigners built barricades around themselves and also said that we must fight back. The foreigners have done no aggressive acts towards the South Africans. The government responds to this by holding a peace march to commemorate the victims of the riots and the vic tims that was originally killed by foreigners. The government is also holding a meeting to see what they can do to prevent this from happening again. Connection To Theme I think that the rioting is senseless and dumb. The reason why I think this is because the foreigners that were killed had nothing to do with the initial act. They didn't have to go around killing random people. They also could have seeked justice and be satisfied without having more peoples lives taken. In class we learned about conflicts between people such as whites vs everyone else in South Africa. This relates to what we are leaning in class because its talking about two different groups of people fighting each other. In this case its races fighting rather than religions.
